A SCHOOLGIRL died after medics failed to give her antibiotic drugs following an abortion.

The terrified 15-year-old was killed by an infection five days after the termination at a Leeds clinic.

An inquest in Huddersfield yesterday heard how Alesha Monique Cheri Thomas, of Fartown, was sent home after the traumatic procedure.

Staff at Marie Stopes International had not given her any medication to take home.

Despite her mum, Rose Bent, calling the clinic the next day with concerns about Alesha, they still weren’t given the antibiotic Doxycycline.

Five days later, the teenager had lost the feeling in her legs, was suffering from severe stomach cramps and her eyes had glazed over.

She had a heart attack at 6.04am on July 11, 2007 as a result of the rare bacterial infection, Toxic Shock Syndrome and died at Huddersfield Royal Infirmary.

Alesha had told her mum she was pregnant a week before the abortion and the two had decided together she should have a termination.

Dr Peter Paku, the gynaecologist who performed Alesha’s operation, said it was the first case in the UK he had heard of when someone had contracted the infection after an abortion.

said the abortion was a ‘lawful procedure with an unintended result’.

Mr Whittaker recorded a verdict of unnatural death from Toxic Shock Syndrome, caused by Staphylococcal Enterotoxin A.

He said: “If she had had the drugs administered to her the balance of probability suggests that she would have been more able to survive.”

Mr Whittaker has reported the case to Marie Stopes International in the hope they will develop a system which will prevent patients missing prescriptions.

It will also be reported to the Lord Chancellor’s Department.
