A teenage cancer patient has raised more than £10,000 for charities helping to fight the disease.

Morgan Sykes, of Hinchliffe Mill, was diagnosed with a rare form of blood cancer just weeks after her 18th birthday.

While undergoing gruelling chemotherapy treatment, Morgan and mum Natalie organised a sponsored walk and afternoon tea to raise funds for the Teenage Cancer Trust and Leukaemia and Lymphoma Research.

The family had hoped to raise £2,000 but ended up raising five times that, handing over £5,000 to both charities.

Morgan was diagnosed with Hodgkin lymphoma in December after feeling unwell. She had an “enlargement” but not a lump above her collarbone.

Rather than sit back Morgan and Natalie set about organising a four-mile walk around the Holme Valley, starting from Holmbridge Church.

The family hoped 100 people would take part – but 173 turned up on the day, making it a big success.

Hairdresser Natalie said: “It was a really beautiful day and everyone said what a lovely walk it was.

“We’ve had so much positive feedback and people want to do it again next year. I’m not sure that’s going to happen because it’s a big event to take on.”

Not only was there the walk, but the parish hall hosted an afternoon tea and entertainment.

At times it was standing room only in the hall and 200 teas were served.

Morgan, a student at Kirklees College in Huddersfield, wasn’t well enough to take part but she cut the ribbon to set the walkers on their way.

She has now just completed her six cycles of chemotherapy and must wait for scan results to see what happens next.

“Morgan is really well at the moment,” said Natalie. “All these people came out to support her and there was a lot of love in that room. It gave us all a huge boost.”
