TWO friends took a top prize at the Mrs Sunderland Music Festival – with a little help from Dad.

Violinists Katrina Lee and Catrin Pryce-Jones, both 17, won the instrumental ensemble class.

They performed Bach’s Violin Concerto accompanied by Catrin’s father John on piano.

Both young women attend Kirklees Music School and want to go to the Royal Scottish Academy.

Catrin, who studies at Huddersfield New College, said: "We’re really good friends and it was great to play together as we have the same ideas about music."

Katrina, from Birchencliffe, added: "It was really exciting to take part and it was good that we had a good range of ages in the class, including Meltham CE School."

The group, known as The Melodious Trio, won the class at Huddersfield Town Hall yesterday. Rebecca Moffat, Lydia Richardson and Nicola Runkee came second while the Saddleworth School Brass Ensemble were third.
