A TEENAGE thief fled when a man confronted him in his home.

The intruder crept into the house on Burn Road in Birchencliffe through an unlocked side door just before 7pm yesterday.

He had picked up a wallet and chequebook when the 36-year-old victim walked into the kitchen.

The thief fled with his haul, along with two accomplices who were waiting outside.

All three youths are white. They ran into Halifax Road and fled towards Ainley Top.

The intruder is 5ft 9in tall, with short, mousey hair. He wore a black top and black clothes.

Anyone who saw the three or has any information should phone Pc Gerry Lenihan on 01484 436664.

Det Con Russ Conlon, of the Kirklees Police intelligence unit, said: "These opportunist thieves try doors at several homes before striking lucky.

"Simply by turning the key in the door you can prevent yourself becoming a crime victim."
