A teenager hit by a car and dragged 100ft down the road has thanked people for their good wishes from his hospital bed.

Jay Harris, 18, fell into the road and was struck by a Nissan Qashqai just before midnight on Saturday.

The horror accident happened in Westgate, Huddersfield, near Lloyds Bank.

The driver was said to be unaware he had hit someone and carried on down the road until a frantic passer-by banged on his window.

Jay was trapped under the car for 10 minutes before being released by firefighters.

He suffered a fractured pelvis and dislocated shoulder.

He was taken to Leeds General Infirmary for treatment and responded this week to well-wishers on the Examiner’s Facebook page.

He wrote: “Thanks to everyone who’s wishing me well. I’ll be absolutely fine – hopefully!”

Jay, who will turn 19 in a couple of weeks, said he wasn’t drunk “in the slightest” and added: “I’m going to be fine.”

Jay Oliver, who was in the town centre at the time, also posted on the Facebook page telling how the driver kept going. He told how he ran across the road and “banged on his window” telling the driver to stop.

Well-wishers sent their best to Jay. Jodie Thomas wrote on Facebook: “Glad Jay’s ok. Was awful what happened but the emergency services were fab.”
