A TEENAGER remained in hospital last night after a Bank Holiday brawl in Huddersfield.

The young man was hospitalised following the mass fight in the town centre in the early hours.

The 18-year-old suffered serious head injuries in the incident on Byram Street in the town centre yesterday morning.

Police have released few details of the incident but confirmed that “quite a large number of people” were involved in the brawl near Chad’s nightclub at 5.25am.

The club, which bills itself as a gay venue, is in Brook Street, just a few yards from the end of Byram Street.

Police threw a large cordon around the scene and officers were there for much of yesterday.

A stallholder at Huddersfield Open Market, just yards from the scene, told the Examiner that there had been a man on the floor who had been treated for a long time by Yorkshire Ambulance Service paramedics before being taken to Huddersfield Royal Infirmary by ambulance.

The young man’s injuries are not believed to be life threatening but he remains in hospital today for observation.

Police said a man was arrested on suspicion of violent disorder in connection with yesterday’s brawl.

Most of Byram Street was cordoned off yesterday morning as detectives searched for clues.

Forensic scientists also combed the cobbled street which runs alongside the Victorian Market Hall.

Nine yellow evidence markers could clearly be seen on the ground and the police experts took a number of photographs of the scene.

Officers were also studying images and footage from the town-centre CCTV camera network.

Huddersfield Open Market was open and busy despite the incident, though the entrance on to Byram Street was closed to prevent shoppers straying into the cordoned-off area.

Anyone with information about the incident can call police on 101.
