TEENAGERS are joining our fight to beat the graffiti vandals who cost Huddersfield tens of thousands of pounds a year.

Youngsters from the Phoenix Youth Club in Dunford Road, Holmfirth, have signed up to The Examiner campaign to combat the taggers and sprayers who make parts of our town an eyesore.

Hannah Bettany, a youth worker for Kirklees Council, said it was often teenagers and children who were blamed for much of the graffiti which blights the area.

She added: "The kids here don't approve of just spraying on any walls. They think there should be special places or graffiti walls where people who want to spray can go and then it would not be on the other walls in the area."

Hannah, who helps run the club aimed at over 13s which has been going for more than a quarter of a century, added: "The teenagers who come here are really willing to help out and make the area look better.

"They are proving that it's not just older people who care about what the area looks like and are prepared to do something about it."

Hannah said club members would be sprucing up the external walls of their club after vandals left their marks.

She added: "We have had graffiti outside on the walls for about two years.

"It wasn't the teenagers who attend this group but they are prepared to do their bit for the area and join in with the clean up."
