YOUNG David Dunne is destined to be a sports star of the future.

That’s the verdict from fellow players in the Huddersfield and District Pool League, where David is thought to be the youngest-ever player.

David made his debut for Deighton WMC B in their game against Cowcliffe Lib B aged just 10 years and two months.

And although he lost, he is already earning plaudits from well-established players both at the pool table and the snooker table.

He learned the game while his mum Michelle worked at The Wise Owl in Deighton, sneaking on for a game at the pool table when the pub was closed.

Now he is a rising star of the Deighton WMC side – and he’s not the only youngster making headlines.

A fellow player is Josh Wenzel, who is a “veteran” aged 14 and has won every match he has played for the team so far.

Club Vice President David Macgregor, who is the B Team Captain, said: “David is in the team on ability alone.

“At the moment we are only playing him in home matches because of his age and the fact that his schooling must come first.

“David is not the only player attracting attention in the team. We also have Josh, who has won all four games he has played in the league and Cup, helping his team to win all their three matches.

“Both players will be competing in the first ever Deighton WMC Open Pool Competition, which is being sponsored by Armitage Leisure on this weekend along with youngsters from Cowcliffe Lib and Lockwood Con. They will be up against some of Huddersfield’s top pool players.

“In the past we have lost some good young players to other clubs by not giving them a chance, but things have now changed and we are encouraging young players to play in both the pool and snooker teams.

“Josh has been playing in the snooker team since he was 14 and I expect David will be in the team in two or three years time.”

David’s dad Gary has been a member of the Deighton club for many years, as has his mum Michelle.

Josh’s dad Dave is also a member as are other members of his family.

Both have been receiving snooker coaching from top players Dale Oakes and Denis Rourke.

Onka Gossal, another player in the Deighton pool side, said: “It’s great to have David and Josh in the team.

“The rest of us have to play well so we don’t get dropped from the team”.
