A DISCOUNT card has been launched in Kirklees to help council tenants save cash.
More than 150 shops and businesses are offering savings to people without rent arrears as a reward for keeping up with their payments.
The Excel Discount Card has been designed by Kirklees Neighbourhood Housing.
The money-saving scheme is offering people deals at local businesses, including food and clothing stores, hairdressers, beauty salons and even solicitors. It is the first card of its kind in the country using local businesses instead of high street chains.
Helen O'Sullivan, KNH Excel manager, said: "When we first asked our customers if they wanted a discount card they said they did.
"But they wanted to be able to use it at their local shops rather than in high street chains.
"Developing it has taken a lot of time and hard work. But it was really important that we come up with something our customers wanted that also helped support local businesses.
"They're an essential part of our communities and our neighbourhoods suffer if they don't do well."
The card is part of the KNH Excel incentive scheme that rewards and recognises good tenants.
It was launched to encourage people with rent arrears to clear their accounts.
The scheme also offers tenants regular competitions and prize draws, community grants of up to £500 and good neighbour awards.
The discount card is available to anyone eligible for KNH benefits who has been a council tenant or leaseholder for at least three months.
They must not owe KNH any money or have broken tenancy conditions.
Any businesses wanting to join the scheme can call 01484 223246.
