A MAN arrested as part of a huge inquiry into international terrorism has vanished.

Bakhtiar Mahmud Perwaiss, 28, who also uses the alias of Berwis, was due to report to Huddersfield police station on bail but vanished.

Now detectives are urging the public to help them find him.

He was one of a number of people arrested by Greater Manchester Police's anti-terrorism unit.

He lost part of a hand in an explosion in Iraq.

The investigation centred on money laundering and funding for terrorist activities linked with Yemen.

Perwaiss should have been at Huddersfield's Castlegate police headquarters November 8 to answer bail, but failed to turn up and has not been seen since.

Perwaiss was arrested in Pontefract under the Police and Criminal Evidence Act 1984 on October 11 by officers from GMP's Anti-Terrorist Unit.

He was charged with money laundering offences following a deception to obtain funds in Yemen.

A police spokesperson said: "There is nothing to suggest Perwaiss represents a danger to the public.

"The police are keen to locate him and would ask that if any members of the public see him, they do not approach him, but call 999 immediately."

Perwaiss claims to be from Iraq and to speak Kurdish. His English is poor.

He is 5ft 8in to 5ft 9in tall, stocky with stubble. His right hand was left disfigured after an injury.

His ring and little finger are missing their tips and are significantly shorter than the other fingers. The injury is distinctive and he claims it was caused while handling explosives in Iraq.

Anyone who sees him should call 999. Anyone with information as to his whereabouts should contact police on 0161 856 9800 or Crimestoppers, anonymously on 0800 555 111.

Perwaiss' arrest was part of a major investigation into funding international terrorism.

Two people, Omar Altimimi and Yusuf Abdullah, are currently charged in connection with this operation, which also involved the search of a number of addresses in Bolton in June.
