A KIRKLEES Green Party councillor has called for the cancellation of the council deal with Tesco to build a massive store on the Huddersfield Sports Centre site.

And Green group leader Clr Andrew Cooper said the onus was now on the council’s new leadership to examine the planned deal in detail.

He said: “With a change in administration we have an ideal opportunity to review this questionable deal between our council and Tesco.

“Like me the local Labour MP Barry Sheerman opposes the building of a Tesco on the Southgate site. We both recognise the potential loss of local jobs and the increased traffic the new store would bring.

“We now have a Labour leader on Kirklees Council’s Cabinet so there has never been a better opportunity to stand up to this monopolistic retail giant.”
