A £9m bus timetable system using mobile phone technology has been launched in West Yorkshire.
Bus travel enters a new era with the introduction of Metro's satellite-linked yournextbus information system.
It means passengers across the county can now find out exactly when their next bus will arrive, using WAP or text on their mobile phone or on the web through their computer.
For WAP access, passengers need to open their phone's WAP browser, go to Metro's website at www.wymetro.com and then choose yournextbus from the menu.
From there they can input the unique number - displayed on every bus stop and shelter - to find when their next bus will arrive.
The information, which is usually shown for the next four buses due at the stop, is refreshed every minute, counting down to the arrival of the bus.
To use the text service passengers simply have to enter the unique stop number and text it to 63876, which spells Metro on the phone keypad.
They will then receive a text message reply, giving them details of the next four buses calling at the stop, telling them how many minutes until they arrive and indicating whether the bus is a low-floor, easy access vehicle.
The same real-time information is available from a PC through Metro's web site at www.wymetro.com
Metro chairman Clr Karam Hussain said: "Yournextbus is the country's most extensive real time information system outside London. It will be a major benefit for West Yorkshire bus passengers.
"People can use yournextbus to time the journey to their stop with confidence and keep their waiting time to a minimum.
"People tell us they require more information about the services they use and yournextbus gives them what they need."
Yournextbus will provide information for about 90% of buses in West Yorkshire.
Metro and South Yorkshire transport chiefs have secured over £2.5m from the Government towards the scheme.
Metro also has cash for about 800 electronic real time displays. It will start introducing them at key stops across the county from next year.
WAP users will pay usual fees and texts are charged at the user's standard outbound rate. Metro's reply will be no more than 12p.
