TWO Huddersfield area people have had their efforts in the community recognised at a 10 Downing Street reception.

Shirley Simmonds, of the Holmfirth-based Friend to Friend group, which helps elderly people in the Holme and Colne valleys, and Tony White, secretary of the Three Valleys Sports Trust, were nominated by Colne Valley MP Kali Mountford.

"They really are community stars and have 18 years of voluntary work between them,"' said the MP.

"Shirley and Friend to Friend help so many older people and Tony is so persistent in his efforts to see an athletics track for young people in Golcar."

Prime Minister Tony Blair said: "The reception was all about the people who work to improve communities across Britain. I wish Tony and Shirley every success."
