WHEN she married a farmer Gladys Pell was well prepared for life on the farm.

For the former Land Girl had learned everything she needed to know when she served her country working on farms across the Huddersfield area during the Second World War.

Gladys, now 85, was thrilled to received her award, which came as a “very nice surprise’’ surprise to her when the postman delivered it.

She said: “I wasn’t expecting it at all, it was just pushed through my door!

“I haven’t even taken it out of its box yet, but I expect it will take pride of place somewhere in my house when I do.

“It was very nice to be recognised, but it’s been a long time coming.’’

Gladys, from Birdsedge, served with the Land Army between 1941 and 1946.

She said: “I quite enjoyed the work and I got to make some new friends. It was quite physically demanding at times, with long hours.’’

After the war she married Dennis Pell, who died 12 years ago, and was a farmer’s wife for 48 years.
