KIRKLEES Council officials have been slam-dunked for putting a basketball court on a slope.

Mother-of-two Anita Murgatroyd had been looking forward to the completion of work to revamp the playground at Ainley Top.

She said she welcomed new play equipment to replace old swings and a slide.

But she said that providing a single basketball hoop was an "an absolute shambles".

She added: "They have put up just one hoop, so the kids can't even have a proper game.

"They've also built it on a slope, so the ball continually rolls down to the grass area, which is covered in dog dirt.

"The council has put new tarmac down, but they haven't marked it out and they haven't put up a fence to stop the ball rolling away."

Mrs Murgatroyd said the play area, off Ainley Close, had not been improved to the same standard as other sites.

"It's been done on the cheap," she said. "Who would build a basketball court on a slope?"

A council spokeswoman said: "Plans for the basketball ring and court were part of local consultation before work started and no changes were suggested. The court is in the best practical place.

"The facilities have been open two weeks and we have had no complaints from young people."
