A GROUP of Huddersfield composers are all celebrating after achieving success in the music world.

Four PhD students from the university have had their work chosen for performance and recording around the world.

The music of second-year student Scott McLaughlin has been selected for the International Society for Contemporary Music’s World Music Days in Hong Kong.

His work, Penumbra, will be played by the Luxembourg Sinfonietta at the high-profile event later this year.

Nick Williams had his work commissioned by the Huddersfield Contemporary Music Festival last year and recorded by BBC Radio 3. His work will also be performed at this year’s festival.

His main academic interest is new Dutch music and he is building contacts with composers and musicians in Holland.

Meanwhile, Margaret Haley has been chosen for a scheme which teams up composers with amateur choirs, orchestras or ensembles for a year. She will compose a piece to be performed at the end of the year.

And Richard Glover has been appointed as the resident composer for the Birmingham Contemporary Music Group, which consists of players from the City of Birmingham Symphony Orchestra. He was selected for the prestigious role after battling it out against some of the country’s top young talent.

Dr James Saunders, who leads Huddersfield University’s composition team, said: “Historically, Huddersfield has a good track record of producing composers.”
