LIBERAL Democrat leader Charles Kennedy's wife gave birth to a baby son today.

Donald James Kennedy was born at 12.14am at St Thomas's Hospital in London, weighing six pounds nine ounces.

Both mother and baby are fine.

In a statement, Charles and Sarah Kennedy (pictured recently) said they were "absolutely delighted."

In the statement the couple said: "It is wonderful for us both and we are extremely grateful for the superb clinical and midwifery support which we have received. "Everything went very smoothly and we are looking forward to returning home as a family."

Mr Kennedy's spokeswoman said they would decide later today when the couple would leave hospital.

Mr Kennedy yesterday put the first day of his general election tour on hold when his wife, 35, was taken to hospital. The party also postponed the launch of its manifesto, which had been due today.

Mr Kennedy has made it clear that he intends to take time off to be with his wife and new son. His deputy, Sir Menzies Campbell, has taken over his tour in the meantime.
