GARDENERS have been rewarded for making Lockwood bloom this summer.

About 20 green-fingered residents took part in the third annual competition organised by Lockwood and Thornton Lodge Residents Against Crime group.

"This year the standard has gone up by so much it was very hard to pick a winner," said chairman Shirley Bowden.

Mr Osman Nazir was finally chosen to receive the top prize of £50. There were four second-placed entrants and six third. They received £25 and £15 respectively.

"Really and truly they all deserved a first prize. It was a sheer delight to look at all the gardens," said Mrs Bowden.

"We visited one elderly man who has got peaches growing in his garden."

The gifts were presented by Clr Molly Walton and Dot Freeman, of Kirklees Council's community support services.
