"WE can't believe they are gone.

"They were so full of fun - we expect them to walk through the door smiling any minute."

These are the touching words of two families robbed of their loved ones in a tragic road accident.

David Baillie, 56, and Brian Bentley, 48, were killed following a collision on Meltham Road in Marsden, just after midnight on Sunday morning.

The pair, who were best friends, were returning home after a night out in Slaithwaite.

David lived with his son Raymond, 27, on nearby Woods Avenue.

Raymond, who works for SB Homes, was one of the first people on the scene of the crash.

He said: "My dad had been dragged about 40ft by the car and Brian was laid on the road.

"My dad was still breathing and Brian wasn't so I went over to Brian to administer first aid.

"I have recently been trained to do first aid at work and my dad would have wanted me to try to save Brian."

Brian's brother Terrance Bentley, who lived with him on nearby Woods Terrace, had just gone to bed before the accident.

He said: "I heard a taxi pull up and knew it was those two because I could hear them laughing.

"The next thing, there was a huge thud and it just went quiet. I knew something was wrong."

Flowers and tributes now adorn the lamp-post next to the spot where the pair died.

The woman driver of the car was unhurt and police are continuing their investigations.
