TWO Huddersfield soldiers have taken part in an Army judo event - and one was on the winning team.

Sgt Andy Pumford serves with the 9/12 Lancers' Regiment which triumphed in the Army Judo Championships in Aldershot.

Sgt Gez Armstrong, who is in the Army Physical Training Corps, also took part.

Andy, 35, said: "I started judo in 1992 when I was on an Army physical training course. I enjoyed the sport and stuck with it."

Gez said: "I only started judo last year, after a mate recommended it. I've discovered it's an excellent sport, combining fitness, skill and mental agility."

Gez went to Honley High School and was an engineering apprentice before joining the army in 1994.

He is married to Vicky and they have a two-year-old son, James. His mum, Anita, lives in Huddersfield.

Andy worked for Wickes building supplies before joining the Army in 1988. He and wife Adele have a 15-month-old baby, Megan. Andy's father, Terry, lives in Huddersfield.
