A NEW student venue has opened in Huddersfield - with a university graduate running things.

The Mess has opened in the premises of former pub T'Old Steam Pig at the bottom of Newsome Road to cater for the town's university students.

The general manager is Dan Hellewell, of Leeds, who left Huddersfield University about 18 months ago with a degree in business studies.

The pub is owned by businessmen Nick Gill and Stacey Jeffs.

Mr Hellewell said: "I used to live at Newsome and I often passed the pub.

"I used to think what a great place it would be for students to have a pint or two without going into town."

The new owners bought the pub last February and closed it for redevelopment.

Mr Hellewell was project manager for the work, which included knocking through to a house next door and converting the upper storey to provide 3,000sq ft of floorspace.

Attractions include pool tables, satellite TV and a menu of traditional food priced for students on a tight budget.
