FIRE officers are warning motorists not to risk driving on icy roads.

Although the snow has mostly melted, patches of icy and hard pack ice still remain on higher ground, leading to treacherous driving conditions, according to Huddersfield Watch Commander Chris Bell.

Mr Bell’s warnings follow an incident at Castle Hill which led to a fire crew spending 40 minutes gritting the road to free the fire engine, and emergency cover being called over from Dewsbury.

The Huddersfield crew was called out at 6.47am yesterday morning after a car slipped on ice on the Castle Hill approach road and slid down a bank. It is believed the man was intending to walk his dog at the local landmark.

The crew freed the man, but were then unable to descend the road safely until they had gritted the road.

Mr Bell said: “Drivers should take into consideration the fact that in higher areas and in isolated pockets, there is still ice on the road. Don’t drive on these roads if you think you will have difficulties”.
