One of Huddersfield's most popular coffee shops was broken into by a thief who stole their takings... as well as cake and craft beer.

The sweet-toothed criminal broke into CoffeeEvolution on Church Street at midnight last night (Tues) and raided the shop's till and safe taking hundreds of pounds in cash, as well as a smartphone that was used for playing music.

More unusually, manager James Perkins said the culprit also took a tray of vegan chocolate muffins and bottles of a specific, rare Japanese craft lager from the fridge.

James, who has owned the award-winning business for 18 years, said this was the first time they had had a break in.

Devastatingly, the thief took more than the shop is insured for and James fears they will not get back the money taken.

He said: "We've been robbed. It's our 18th year of business this year and we have never been robbed before.

"Someone broke in at around midnight and stole cash from the till and from the safe. Interestingly, they've then taken a tray of vegan chocolate muffins baked for us. I suppose it shows how good they are. They also took a particular beer from the fridge called Hitachino Yuzu lager. It's very odd."

CCTV shows the thief smash their way into CoffeeEvolution in Huddersfield

"You can see the person on our CCTV crouching down trying to avoid the camera - so they clearly know where it is.

"Luckily, they didn't steal the coffee so we're okay - it's business as usual."

CoffeeEvolution first opened back in 2000 and has stood the test of time as a popular meeting spot in Huddersfield. It's run by James and brother Jeremy Perkins who go under the name the Bean Brothers.

The shop has won various awards, including the Examiner's People's Choice award for best café.
