A 30-year-old man sneaked into a house and stole a birthday card with money in it ... and for his second burglary he stole a Porsche car.

Simon Jennings admitted burgling a house in Burley Walk in Batley on August 2 last year.

Bashir Ahmed, prosecuting, told Leeds Crown Court that a woman and her three children lived in the house – and one of them was upstairs praying when the offence took place.

He said that Jennings, of no fixed abode, knew the family and had even carried out decorating in the house.

Leeds Crown Court.

The defendant entered through an unlocked door and was confronted by the victim’s 21-year-old son as he came downstairs.

When the woman returned home she noticed a birthday card and £20 was missing.

Jennings also committed a burglary in Heckmondwike in September when he stole a Porsche Cayenne car, as well as a vacuum cleaner, duvets, clothing, watches and jewellery . He was snared after leaving his fingerprint and the scene and in November was jailed for 12 months.

Jennings, now a serving prisoner at HMP Humber, pleaded guilty to one count of burglary when he appeared back in court again on Thursday.

Judge Peter Collier QC, the Recorder of Leeds, sentenced him to three months’ imprisonment, meaning his earliest release date for both incidents is in April.
