OWNERS of one make of pick-up car have been warned: Thieves know how to get around its security system.

Three Mitsubishi L200s have been stolen in Huddersfield over the last three months and the villains tried in vain to take two more.

Det Con Stewart Green, of Huddersfield police, revealed that the owners of 40 Mitsubishi L200s in rural areas bordering South Yorkshire are being written to by police warning them their vehicles were at risk.

These are the areas where most of the crimes have happened.

Det Con Green said: "It is clear these thieves know their way around the car's security systems so we would urge owners to enhance their security by using a different immobiliser, steering wheel lock or even a Tracker system which means the car can be traced if stolen.

"Once taken, our understanding is that the thieves change the vehicle's identity, including its vehicle identification number and registration plates."

He said a lot of 50cc mopeds had also been stolen in Huddersfield recently.

"Many are left outside homes and protected by small chains and locks," he said. "These can be easily cut through by thieves.

"It is best to put the mopeds in garages, sheds or outhouses and use a heavy duty chain."
