FIRE crews resting after dousing a blaze in a stolen car scared off thieves who were about to set fire to another vehicle.

Crews from Huddersfield were dealing with a car on fire on Dalton Bank Road, behind Syngenta, in the nature reserve at 4am this morning.

They stayed at the scene while the engine was sent back to refill with water.

After only a couple of minutes crews spotted two cars coming down the approach road.

When the drivers of the cars saw the firefighters the first car, a green Peugeot, stopped and its driver jumped into the second car, a Rover Metro.

The Peugeot was found to have been stolen.

Police are investigating.
