A VILLAGE has been hit by a spate of thefts from cars.

Several cars were targeted in Kirkheaton and hundreds of pounds worth of property was stolen after thieves gained access to car boots through insecure back seats.

Thieves raided five cars and vans overnight on Sunday and the early hours of Monday.

They stole an Atlas Copco power drill valued at £370 from a vehicle in Meadow Park and a £400 Dewalt cordless power drill from a company van in St Andrew's Drive.

A Bosch jig-saw valued at £60, a hammer drill worth £100 and a Black and Decker electric plane worth £50 were also stolen. And a denim jacket was taken from the back seat of a car in Moorside Road.

Pc Allison Cook, of Huddersfield police, urged people to take extra care.

She said: "If you know thieves can get into your car boot then remove all valuables before you leave the vehicle.

"And don't store tools overnight in vans."

* A £500 set of Mizuno left-handed golf clubs was stolen from the boot of a car in Prospect Road, Longwood, some time between Sunday and Monday.
