A man who stole and crashed his girlfriend’s car while she was sleeping faces a possible jail term.

Thomas Goldthorpe hailed a taxi following the smash, telling the driver: “I’m drunk and I haven’t got a licence - I’ll get into trouble.”

Magistrates in Huddersfield warned him that prison is an option after being told that it was his third drink-driving related offence.

Goldthorpe also pleaded guilty to charges of aggravated vehicle taking, driving whilst disqualified and using a vehicle without insurance.

The court heard that he crashed his girlfriend’s Ford Ka at just after midnight on February 22.

Police were called to Rishworth Road in Dewsbury following a 999 call that there had been a smash there.

Vanessa Jones, prosecuting, said: “The car had crashed into railings and a man was seen getting out of the vehicle and into a taxi.

“They found extensive front end damage to the driver’s side and the keys still in the ignition.

“A taxi driver who observed the incident said the man said: ‘Take me away, it’s my girlfriend’s car and I’m drunk.

“‘I haven’t got a licence, I’ll get into trouble.’”

CCTV from the bus station located Goldthorpe, of Thornton Road in Thornhill, in the area.

Tests showed that he had 75 microgrammes of alcohol in 100 millilitres of breath.

This was more than twice the legal limit of 35 microgrammes.

Last July the 25-year-old was banned from the road following a drink-driving offence.

The new matter marked his third such offence within a 10 year period.

Magistrates agreed to adjourn his case until March 13 for an alcohol treatment assessment.

They warned Goldthorpe that custody will be considered then.
