A MAN who drove at double the speed limit while being pursued by police is to be sentenced next month.

Shamas Zahid drove at speeds of 84mph along Bradford Road, Gomersal, on May 29, Kirklees Magistrates’ Court heard.

Prosecutor, Paul Ramsey, said two police officers were on duty at 11.16pm that evening when they saw a “fast-moving vehicle”.

He said they made an average speed check and lit their lights, as the driver of a Renault Megane sped past them.

Mr Ramsey added: “He carried on at speeds of 84mph, overtaking other vehicles and went the wrong way around ‘keep left’ bollards.”

“He failed to stop at red traffic lights, narrowly missing an HGV and a Toyota Corolla.”

Eventually, he did hit another vehicle as well as The Greyhound pub.

He was taken to hospital for treatment before providing a reading of 47 microgrammes of alcohol in 100 millilitres of breath. The legal limit is 35.

The defendant, of Headfield View, Thornhill Lees, Dewsbury, pleaded guilty to drink-driving, driving a motor vehicle dangerously and using a vehicle without third party insurance.

Zahid will be sentenced at Leeds Crown Court on July 8. He was granted unconditional bail and given an interim driving ban.
