THOUSANDS made Ravensknowle Children’s Gala yet another successful year at the weekend.

Despite a heavy downpour on Sunday afternoon, around 2,000 people turned up to the event.

The gala, now in its 81st year, fills the entire grounds of Ravensknowle Park at Moldgreen.

The day began with a parade led by the Chesterfield Musketeers.

Jeanette Saul has been on the gala committee for around 15 years.

She said: “It was a fantastic turnout and everyone really enjoyed the event despite the bad weather early on. The gala is renowned to be very well supported and this year was no different.”

Charlie Chaplin impersonator Frank Terry provided some of the entertainment, along with a fairground and a display by Moldgreen ARLFC.

The Deputy Mayor of Kirklees, Cllr Julie Stewart-Turner, gave a welcoming speech and made an appeal for more gala committee members.

Jeanette added: “We now only have 10 committee members so we could really do with some extra pairs of hands.

“It is a huge event to organise so any extra help offered will be much appreciated.”
