“Come on down and dance!”

That’s the invitation being thrown out by organisers of Huddersfield’s colourful St Patrick’s Day parade.

The 16th event is back in town this coming weekend.

The main part of the family festival of fun takes place on Sunday March 13, at 1pm, and organisers want everyone to sing, dance, clap and join in the famous Irish craic.

It is a celebration that reflects on the nation’s legacy over the past one hundred years while manifesting Irish culture’s positive contribution to Huddersfield’s community.

The event is being backed by the Government of Ireland and Kirklees Council and gets under way on Saturday night, at 8.30pm, when The City of Limerick Pipe and Drum band join top country singer Nicky James in the Parade Eve concert at The Irish Centre.

Both acts will join local groups on the day that include Giants Causeway rock band, Vital Statistix rock covers band, Frumptarn Guggenband, Slick Stick Sambastic, Silver Stars Majorettes, Cassidy Irish dancers, The Giants Cheerleaders, Wild Irish Roses, Trad Irish outfits Keep it Country and Celtic Uno (with guests) as well as a debut for Jackanory Jazz.

On Sunday attractions will include Fidget Feet street dancers, a vintage David Brown Tractor and exhibition, compere and disco. Republic of Ireland supporters will be displaying Ireland’s football past alongside the flags of opponents at Euro 2016, and there will be dancers in traditional costume, street exhibitions, booklets and flags.

A parade through the town centre will begin at 1pm and last for about 90 minutes, including floats, dancers and bands.

A spokesman said: “The Parade has continued in its growth and popularity from its inception in 2001, each year striving to improve on the last.

“The enthusiasm of both participants and spectators alike ensures it is a great success.

“It is generally agreed it is a fantastic Parade with the efforts of all involved, being displayed through wonderful performance, making for an enjoyable day all round.

“This year’s Parade follows the successful format used for former Parades, with once again visiting bands and groups taking part. The Parade has managed to secure the services of The City of Limerick Pipe and Drum Band and we look forward to welcoming them back to Huddersfield again.”
