Thousands of people lapped up fun, sun and live music at this year’s Mirfield Show.

Organisers said the attendance of Sunday’s show was pushing the 10,000 capacity with the showground in Huddersfield Road bursting at the seams.

Highlights of the day included Joseph’s Amazing Racing Pigs and the Dingle Fingle Comedy Car Stunt Show.

The six rare breed pigs took part in some wacky races over hurdles while the car stunts team – billed as the only comedy car act in the UK – drew both gasps of amazement and bursts of laughter.

Events in the main ring kept families entertained all day long while live bands took to the stage, hosted by West Yorkshire-based radio station The Pulse, under the Mirf’Fest live music banner.

The annual tug of war contest becomes more competitive every year, even attracting a team from the RAF practising for the Highland Games at Braemar.

The RAF boys proved no match for the macho men from the Navigation Tavern in Mirfield who pulled them over to reach the final against burly lads from the recently-formed rugby league club Mirfield Stags.

Mirfield’s only RL club, the Stags proved too strong for the Navi and took the crown as tug-o-war champs 2015.

There was also banana-eating competitions, cake-baking contests, flower and vegetables classes, horse and animal classes.

There were lots of charity stalls, plenty of food and drink and a beer tent that was never without a queue.

One of the more bizarre sights was a giant deck chair which people couldn’t resist climbing on for pictures, which flooded social media.

Cameras were always at the ready and even police staff on board the force helicopter got in on the act, snapping the showground from the air.

The rain held off until the very end and show chairman Karen Bullivant said: “It was a brilliant day and a cracking day weather-wise.

“The sun shone virtually all day and while the weather doesn’t make the day it can certainly spoil it.

“We’ve had people coming out in droves which is great for us. We estimate there must have been almost 10,000 people coming through the gates which is close to our maximum.

“The highlight for me was definitely the tug of war. The crowd loves getting involved.”
