A NURSERY threatened with closure has been given a top award.

In February Kirklees Council decided to shut Cambridge Road Nursery, Sankofa Nursery in Hillhouse and Tiddlywinks in Deighton.

But a review of the decision was ordered the following month after campaigners collected 5,000 signatures against the plan.

Last month the council announced that Sankofa will close, Tiddlywinks will remain open and Cambridge Road’s fate will be decided next year.

And now the town centre Cambridge Road nursery has won a Level 3 award in Kirklees Council’s Quality Assurance Scheme. The highest-level prize recognises that it is not only providing excellent day care, but is also improving its service.

Staff will be presented with the award at the Galpharm Stadium on Monday.

Debi Johnson – whose two-year-old, Ramiro, attends the nursery – is delighted.

She said: “The parents are very excited that the nursery has once again been recognised for its exceptionally high standards. We cannot help but smile at the irony that council officers who are fighting so hard to close the nursery are having to publicly recognise it as one of the best in Kirklees.”

And Debi encouraged parents to send their children to Cambridge Road. She said: “The council has opened the nursery’s waiting list pending the outcome of an independent audit. I would urge parents looking for quality childcare in a convenient location to look no further than Cambridge Road.”
