TWO men and a woman were arrested after a fire at a Huddersfield town centre flat.

The fire broke out on the 10th floor of Ibbotson flats on Southgate at about 8.20pm last night.

Station Officer Alvin Crisp, of Huddersfield fire station, said the fire is believed to have started in an armchair in the bed-sitting room of the flat.

He said: "This was a serious flat fire and caused sufficient damage to warrant investigation by the police and the fire investigation department."

Station Officer Crisp said two fire engines from Huddersfield, one from Marsden and the hydraulic platform from Huddersfield were called to the scene after an automatic fire alarm went off.

Firefighters spent about an hour tackling the blaze and a further two hours at the scene while investigations were taking place.

People living in neighbouring flats were told to stay indoors and close their doors and windows.

A CID spokesman said the three people arrested were due to be questioned later today.

One of the men is believed to have been the occupier of the flat.
