ONLY three candidates will contest the Liversedge and Gomersal by-election.

The vote takes place on June 13 and was prompted when Conservative councillor Margaret Bates resigned due to ill health last month.

Nominations have now closed and the Examiner has already revealed the Tories have put up Sharon Light, the wife of Kirklees Tory leader Robert, to fight to retain the seat.

Top of her agenda is planning issues and education. She is a mother of three and works with vulnerable families in Bradford.

Labour have selected former amateur rugby player Simon Alvy, of Heckmondwike, as their candidate.

Mr Alvy, the son of former Lib Dem councillor Geoff Alvy, said: “Local people are very unhappy at the way they are bearing the brunt of Coalition cuts.

“They also want to see action on the things that affect their daily lives – traffic, schools, flooding, the state of the roads, dog fouling and litter – and they are unhappy that these things simply don’t get addressed properly.”

He is married and has two children and stood for the Birstall and Birkenshaw seat last year but lost out to Clr Andrew Palfreeman.

The Liberal Democrats have selected Richard Farnhill, of Cleckheaton, as their candidate.

Mr Farnhill, 37, a Cleckheaton businessman, feels the ward had been “neglected”, saying: “The people of the ward need somebody to stand up for them.

“Our main issue is to save Spen Pool, we’ve had 12,0000-13,000 signatures, the Tories and Labour are mocking us, saying it won’t close. But Spen Pool is coming to an end of it’s life and there is no money in the budget to replace it.”

He also said everyday issues such as dog fouling and street signs needed tackling.

He’s married to Tracy and has two step-children.
