FIREFIGHTERS cut a driver free after his car ploughed into a lamp post in Denby Dale.

The accident happened at Wakefield Road at about 7.56pm last night.

The Toyota hatchback overtook another vehicle before careering out of control and hitting the post.

The back seat passenger, a teenage girl, was flung through the windscreen.

The female front seat passenger suffered head injuries but was able to free herself from the car.

The male driver was cut free by fire crews from Huddersfield, Holmfirth and Skelmanthorpe.

He suffered a suspected broken arm and shoulder along with neck and head injuries.

Three ambulances attended the smash.

Huddersfield fire officer David Rawnsley said: "They are very lucky to be alive."
