Footsore walkers conquered Yorkshire’s three peaks in just under 12 hours to pay for youngsters to go to the seaside.

And it is sure to be a grand day out for the event may have raised around £20,000.

Twenty-five fundraisers from the Huddersfield Town Foundation tackled Whernside, Ingleborough and Pen-y-Ghent – an uphill and down dale expedition of 24.5 miles.

The walkers were joined by one man and his dog – Town chairman Dean Hoyle and his dog Sassy, dubbed the adventure’s “lucky mascot.”

The fundraisers are expected to bring in around £10,000 and Dean will then match it pound for pound as he does with all fundraising for the Town Foundation charity.

Dean was joined by Town manager Mark Robins, directors Sean Jarvis and Ann Hough along with several local business people and sponsors.

The walkers set off from Horton-in-Ribblesdale at 6.45am on Friday.

Dean said: “We kept the numbers down to see if it can become an event every year and open it up to more people – it was fabulously organised. The views were fantastic, there was wonderful camaraderie along the way and it was a great community event. Lots of people who did the three peaks challenge would now like to come and help out during our day out at the seaside. At the moment it’s looking like we might go to Filey.”

Kirklees Clr Martyn Bolt said: “There were a few aches, pains and blisters but people were still smiling afterwards. The views were stunning from the top of Whernside. It was hard work but very worthwhile.”

The foundation was set up by Dean to help give youngsters across Kirklees a better start in life.

The foundation currently serves 1,000 free breakfasts every day at 16 schools.
