THREE people fled their flats after a fire broke out.
Two young women and a man escaped from the building on Wentworth Street near Greenhead Park at about midday yesterday.
The blaze was started by a lit candle which had been left unattended in a store room.
Two fire crews from Huddersfield spent 90 minutes dealing with the fire.
Huddersfield Fire Station watch manager Andy Blackburn explained what happened.
He said: The fire was started by a candle which had been left unattended in the store room of the flat. "The flames spread to the curtains and damaged about a fifth of the room. There were two women in the flat in their 20s who were alerted by their smoke alarm. They escaped and alerted a middle-aged man in the flat above."
Mr Blackburn added: "I would urge people not to leave candles unattended, it’s one of our key fire safety messages."
