Three people were injured, one of them seriously, after a two-car smash at an accident blackspot.

Two cars, one of them a BMW, were in collision in Liley Lane, Upper Hopton, Mirfield, in a smash which shut the road on Tuesday night.

One of the cars ended up on its roof.

Police and ambulance crews attended the scene at just before 7.30pm.

The accident happened near the Hare and Hounds pub on what is a shortcut from Huddersfield to the M1 motorway.

Mrs Gill Briggs, who lives close to the accident scene at Holly House Farm, told how she heard a car travelling at speed – from the direction of Grange Moor – as it came towards a left hand bend in the road.

“We heard the sound of the car and just waited for the bang,” she said. “We just knew what was going to happen.”

Mrs Briggs, whose husband John has lived at the family farm all his life, said there were a spate of accidents on the stretch last year after the road was re-surfaced in August.

Drivers lost control and demolished walls and fencing. One car came to rest against her living room wall.

“There must have been about eight crashes back then,” said Mrs Briggs. “It’s calmed down since and we hope it’s not starting up again.”

There was speculation at the time that the road surface or camber was to blame.

The stretch has recently been resurfaced with stone chippings and new white lines have been laid.

Mrs Briggs believes drivers simply go too fast on the 40mph road.

“Speed is a factor,” she said. “Drivers don’t give the road the respect it deserves.”

A West Yorkshire Police spokesman said three people were injured. One was believed to have serious but not life-threatening injuries. There were no other details available.
