French music lovers may be forgiven for thinking they were seeing double.

The audience at a series of Kirklees Youth Symphony Orchestra (KYSO) concerts on the continent got double value.

The orchestra has just completed a tour in the south of France and had three sets of twins and two triplets among the performers.

It proved the old adage that talent runs in the family.

The youngsters played at venues including the Cathedrale St Saveur, Aix en Provence, and Abbaye de Frigolet.

They rounded off the tour with a concert at Disneyland, Paris. This was the final tour for this quad of twins and triplets, as some are leaving for university this month.

Abigail Askew is one of triplets who attends the orchestra with her flautist sister Heather. She will be stepping down as leader of the orchestra and going on to study music at Cardiff.

Heather is about to begin a teaching degree, while twins Adam and Matthew Waterson (trombone and French horn) are both heading for Cambridge University.

George and Jack Hardwick (trombone and violin) and Emily and Jemima Stephenson (clarinet and violin) will continue performing with the group, which has just completed a successful recruitment drive, growing to over 70 members this year.

Musical director Thom Meredith, who is also principal of Kirklees Music School, said: “All musicians in KYSO are important as individuals, but these siblings all have talent and dedication in common – as well as sharing birthdays!”

The orchestra is part of the music school and provides orchestral experience for local students who have reached advanced standards of musicianship.

It performs regular concerts and embraces a variety of genres and styles, from classical to contemporary, film and popular music.
