Three people involved in a fatal crash in Calderdale Way in Elland that claimed the life of a 21-year-old are still receiving treatment in hospital for their injuries.

The un-named 24-year-old front seat passenger remains in a serious condition after suffering multiple injuries in the 1.15am smash but his life is no longer thought to be in danger.

Meanwhile, the two other passengers who were originally thought to have only received minor injuries are still in hospital where they are receiving treatment for fractures.

The four people were all travelling in the stolen BMW car when it careered 40 feet down a tree-lined banking and landed on Huddersfield Road.

The driver who died in the crash was named locally as 21-year-old Jamie Baines, formerly of Huddersfield.

The crash left the road closed for several hours as police investigated, causing traffic problems in Elland and Ainley Top.

Det Sgt Carole Greaves, of the Major Collision Enquiry Team, said: “Enquiries are ongoing into what has clearly been a very serious incident and we are appealing for anyone who saw the collision or the events leading up to it.

“We would also like to speak with anyone who saw the BMW in the moments leading up to the incident.

“Extensive enquiries remain ongoing and anyone who has information should contact the Major Collision Enquiry Team on 101.”
