VANDALS have destroyednew saplings designed to improve an Almondbury park.

Kirklees Council is investing money in smaller parks to improve them for the communities they serve.

Horticultural consultant Graham Porter - who is the Examiner's gardening expert - has been drafted in by Kirklees to upgrade the parks.

Twenty two crab apple trees were planted over winter in Fernside Park, off Fernside Avenue, Almondbury.

And vandals have now snapped five of them in half.

They also uprooted a new bin that had been recently installed.

Mr Porter said: "The aim over the coming years is to improve these smaller parks - known as secondary parks - throughout Kirklees.

"It's just such a shame the vandals have targeted work that is meant to improve the parks for them and everyone else in their community."
