PEOPLE in Huddersfield have given the seal of approval to town centre plans.

They like Kirklees Council's plans to improve the Macaulay Street triangle outside Huddersfield bus station.

A summary of the results of the public consultation exercise was put before councillors on Huddersfield area committee on Tuesday, and overall people are in favour of the proposed changes which will cost £210,000.

The majority of respondents were in favour of brighter, more colourful paving, along with new and improved decorative street lighting.

Better CCTV coverage was also popular, as was new seating.

People were also largely in favour of having new litter bins and level access to all areas to improve accessibility.

A survey of public views found that fewer people were in favour of new cycle parking facilities.

The majority of people were in favour of improved signs and an information board, wider pavements and having a dedicated space for events and exhibitions.

Landscaping the sites with new tall and thin trees to replace the existing ones and new planted areas with decorative railings were also popular.

Clr Annie Smith said she thought more seating would be useful - many smokers congregated around the entrance to the bus station because the station was now a smoke-free zone.

The work is to be completed by Christmas this year.

The draft proposals, together with recommendations from members of Huddersfield area committee, will be put before the Cabinet on March 31 for approval.
