A PRISON officer was seriously injured after he was attacked by an inmate, it was revealed today.

It is understood the guard at Armley Prison in Leeds was assaulted on Tuesday evening.

He was taken to Leeds General Infirmary, where he is being treated for a head injury.

Police said two men have been arrested in connection with the attack.

West Yorkshire Police said in a statement: "It happened at 5.30pm on April 27.

"Police received a report of an assault on a prison officer at HMP Leeds.

"A 49-year-old man was taken to Leeds General Infirmary where he was treated for his injuries. He is in a stable condition.

"Two men, aged 39 and 25, have been arrested in connection with the incident and remain in police custody."

A spokesman for the Prison Service said: "Violence in prisons is not tolerated in any form.

"Assaults on prison staff are taken very seriously and the incident is now subject to a police investigation."
