FIRE ripped through an Elland hillside last night, lighting up the night skies.

An area of grass banking – around 200 metres squared – next to the A629 Elland bypass was set alight at 10pm.

Fire crews from Elland, Brighouse and Huddersfield have been battling the blaze throughout the night.

The steep incline of the hillside and no nearby water supply have hindered their efforts.

The fire is this morning believed to be under control but crews will be checking the scene throughout the day.
