FORTY cannabis plants were discovered by firefighters at a property in Hillhouse this morning.

Huddersfield fire crews were called to the house on Midland Street at 10.45am after a neighbour smelt smoke.

Fire crews were forced to break into the property where they found the smoke to be coming from a lamp which had fallen over and started a small blaze in the cellar.

A spokesman for West Yorkshire Police confirmed that 40 cannabis plants were recovered from the cellar and upstairs of the property, as well as hydroponics equipment.

The investigation is ongoing.
