COLNE Valley environmental worker Mick Smith is waging a war on litter.

Mick, who is River Colne project officer at the Slaithwaite-based Colne Valley Trust, is doing regular litter-picks along the River Colne and Huddersfield Narrow Canal between Marsden and Milnsbridge.

He said: "I get fed up of walking along this beautiful valley and having it spoiled by the rubbish dropped by a small minority of thoughtless people with no respect for their environment."

Each litter-pick takes him about two hours.

Mick said litter was not just an eyesore but a danger to wildlife.

He added: "I enjoy the clean result at the end. It gives me a sense of satisfaction.

"It also gives me an opportunity to do a wildlife survey of the valley at the same time."

Mick is appealing for anyone who wants to help to contact him.

He would also like businesses on his litter- pick route along the canal to consider allowing him to put his rubbish bag in their bins.

He said: "It gets very heavy after two hours!"
