CANAL enthusiasts can enjoy an unusual evening trip through the Standedge Tunnel at Marsden this month.

The Yorkshire Tourism Society is inviting people to an evening meeting and guided boat trip through the tunnel on Tuesday, September 18 .

The trip will start at 6.15pm, before three presentations in the Standedge Visitor Centre from 7pm.

Speakers will include Nigel Stevens, managing director of Sowerby Bridge firm Shire Cruisers; Rita Carmouche, head of hospitality, tourism, leisure and events at Huddersfield University; and Lesley Grogan, marketing manager at British Waterways.

The aim of the event is to allow people to find out more about the Huddersfield Narrow Canal and Standedge Tunnel.

Society chairman Steve Price said: “We are looking forward to finding out more about the canal, once thought to be the ‘impossible restoration’.’’

Tickets for the event cost £15, with some of the proceeds going to Kirkwood Hospice. To book, phone Powell on 020 8661 4636.
