SPY cameras will be put up to stop violent confrontations at recycling sites.

Kirklees Council’s Cabinet made the move yesterday to prevent commercial vehicles using household waste centres.

A council report highlighted the problem.

It said: “There is evidence to suggest that significant quantities of trade waste are being deposited at household waste recycling centres across the district, despite these sites being provided for householders’ use only.

"The additional waste disposal costs which this imposes on the council is estimated at £33,000 a year.”

CCTV would allow the council to target offending vehicles. The report also said cameras would help protect staff who have been subjected to physical abuse at the sites.

The Cabinet decided to install CCTV cameras at the centres in Bromley Farm in Upper Cumberworth, Emerald Street in Huddersfield, Bent Ley Road in Meltham, Nab Lane in Birstall and Weaving Lane in Dewsbury.

Clr Martyn Bolt (pictured), Cabinet member for the environment, spoke in favour of the spending. He said: “Unfortunately there’s a need in Kirklees to install CCTV cameras at household waste recycling centres. This will allow us to monitor use of the site and also protect our workers.”

The cameras will cost £125,000 to set up, with the council and Sita, which runs the centres, each paying half.
