A CHURCHWARDEN has been rewarded for her tireless efforts to save a church at Scammonden.
Hillary Wood has been highly commended after being nominated for the Beacon 2003 prize.
Beacon, a new charitable initiative, is raising the profile of people who do good work in their community.
Hillary was nominated for her efforts in ensuring the future of St Bartholomew's Church.
Since taking over as one of two church- wardens three years ago, Hillary has led fund- raising activities to start refurbishment of the church, including securing a National Heritage grant.
Roof restoration and associated building work alone is estimated to cost £175,000.
Emily Stonor, chief executive of Beacon, said Hillary's achievements stood out as exceptional.
She said: "Her tireless efforts have galvanised the local community into saving the church."
